The story behind the artwork is one of survival.
It speaks to what happens when a woman’s voice is taken from her and used against her, when she is misidentified as the perpetrator rather than the victim, and when she loses her voice and becomes a number within the carceral system.
But she will rise from the ashes. She will not fail and she will not forget.
She will come out stronger than before.
A broken heart and a broken soul can only remain broken for as long as you allow them to stay in control.
Silence once held power over her. She is no longer silent.
She is heard, she is seen and she is healing.
SASVic thanks Kelly Flanagan, Wiradjuri artist and survivor advocate, whose artwork ‘The Renewal’ features in a suite of resources that empower victim survivors seeking and receiving compensation to make the most of its recovery potential.
