Civil Justice and Recovery Project
Civil compensation for victim survivors of sexual violence can be an important part of justice and recovery. However, victim survivors who receive compensation encounter a range of challenges that undermine the power of compensation to help them recover.

About the project
This Project seeks to empower victim survivors seeking and receiving compensation to make the most of its recovery potential.
We hope to achieve this by:

bringing civil lawyers, financial counsellors and financial advisers together to:

learn about sexual violence and the impacts of trauma

build relationships and referral pathways to make financial supports more accessible

creating resources to help victim survivors navigate their compensation options.
To our knowledge, this Project is the first of its kind in Australia.

As part of the Civil Justice and Recovery Project, we have developed resources to help victim survivors of sexual harm navigate their compensation and financial assistance options.

We developed these resources in consultation with our members, a small group of victim survivors and legal and other support services. You will see that the resources include a powerful feature artwork – ‘The Renewal’ by Wiradjuri artist and survivor advocate Kelly Flanagan. Read the story behind Kelly’s artwork.
